Background of the study
Oral literature, encompassing folktales, proverbs, and epic narratives, has historically been a vital tool for community bonding and cultural transmission in Nsukka Local Government. These oral traditions serve not only as entertainment but also as repositories of communal wisdom, moral values, and historical memory (Okoye, 2023). In indigenous societies, oral literature fosters a sense of identity and belonging, facilitating intergenerational dialogue and strengthening social cohesion. Despite the advent of modern communication technologies, oral traditions continue to play an indispensable role in reinforcing community bonds. Contemporary research indicates that communities actively engaged in the preservation and dissemination of oral literature exhibit stronger cultural resilience and social solidarity (Eze, 2024). However, challenges such as language erosion, modernization, and reduced audience engagement threaten the continuity of these traditions. This study critically examines how oral literature impacts indigenous community bonding, exploring its potential to enhance social cohesion in a rapidly changing cultural landscape (Ibekwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
The decline in the practice and transmission of oral literature in Nsukka has raised concerns about the erosion of indigenous community bonds and cultural continuity. Modern influences and reduced audience participation have weakened the traditional channels of cultural expression. This study aims to assess the extent to which the decline in oral literature affects community bonding and to identify measures that could revitalize these traditional practices, thereby strengthening social cohesion (Okoye, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the impact of oral literature on community bonding.

  2. To identify factors contributing to the decline of oral traditions.

  3. To propose strategies for revitalizing oral literature.

Research questions

  1. How does oral literature influence community bonding in Nsukka?

  2. What factors contribute to the decline of oral literary practices?

  3. What strategies can revitalize oral literature for stronger community cohesion?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oral literature significantly enhances community bonding.

  2. Modernization has negatively impacted the practice of oral traditions.

  3. Revitalization strategies can restore the cultural significance of oral literature.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it demonstrates the role of oral literature in strengthening indigenous community bonds. Its findings will inform cultural preservation policies and community programs aimed at revitalizing traditional narrative practices in Nsukka (Eze, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
